However, it’s essential that you locate the ideal school so that you will receive the extensive training that you require to succeed. As you most likely know, the legal field is among the fastest growing occupations in the United States, and increasingly more academic choices are becoming available, both at school and online. However with so many options to choose from, where does one start? Some potential students start by searching for paralegal schools within traveling distance of their Rockmart homes. Of those choices, they search for the program with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are very important considerations when selecting a college, they are not the only qualifiers you should take into consideration. Things like accreditation and the reputation of the school ought to be taken into consideration also. Later on in this article we will cover a list of concerns that you should ask prospective paralegal certificate schools so that you can assess and compare every one prior to making your selection. But first, let’s have a look at what a paralegal does and the academic alternatives that are offered to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

Rockmart GA law libraryParalegals and legal assistants basically both fill comparable job positions and functions, only with different titles. However, legal secretaries are not the same as either of those two positions and belong to a different job classification. Both paralegals and legal assistants help attorneys in Rockmart GA with a wide range of job duties, such as maintaining client files, legal research, communicating with clients, and drafting legal documents. Their specific job functions are relevant to the type of legal firm where they work. As an example, a legal assistant for a criminal law firm could help with the logistics of a trial or delivering documents to court. In private firms, the work of a paralegal is typically billed hourly as are the lawyer’s. And the same as lawyers, they must conduct themselves with a high level of professionalism and follow a strict standard of professional ethics. As mentioned, their responsibilities can be diverse in support of the practices where they are employed, but some of their routine tasks can include:

  • Researching and fact checking cases
  • Conducting research on related laws and cases
  • Drafting correspondence and legal papers
  • Submitting legal documents with opposing counsel or the court
  • Helping attorneys get ready for trial and keep organized with their cases
  • Organizing and maintaining legal documents, files and additional records

With all of their responsibilities, the job of a Rockmart GA paralegal can be complicated and quite demanding. However, what they are not legally allowed to do is offer legal advice and counsel or represent a client in a legal action. But paralegals are not restricted to clerical or administrative functions more apropos to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals really are the right hand support systems for lawyers. And because they do so much of the legal preparation and ground work, lawyers are able to manage a much larger volume of cases or clients than they could otherwise.

Paralegal Programs and Certification

law books and Rockmart GA judge's gavelAs we discussed earlier, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals perhaps having more professional sounding job titles. In any case, for either position the academic requirements and opportunities will be the same. The quickest way to launch your career in Rockmart GA as a paralegal is by earning a certificate, which may take just 6 months to accomplish. Most entry level positions do call for an Associate’s Degree, which furnish a more extensive education and can be obtained at many community colleges in 2 years. For an even more comprehensive education, four year Bachelor’s Degrees are available also. When you have obtained either a certificate or degree, you may choose to continue and obtain a certification. Although it is not a legal requirement in Georgia to practice as a paralegal, certification can not only help increase your employment opportunities, but help substantiate you as a professional as well. Some of the highly regarded certifying organizations in the field are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a degree or certificate from an accredited program (we will address the benefits of accreditation later) and earning a certification, you will have taken two essential first steps that will help guarantee your success as a paralegal in Rockmart GA.

Online Paralegal Training

attending paralegal school online in Rockmart GAOnline paralegal schools have become more available and may be a good alternative for those in Rockmart GA searching for convenient access to classes and flexible scheduling. Online schools can be particularly appealing to those who continue to work while obtaining a degree. As an added benefit, online schools can in some cases be less costly than more traditional options. Even ancillary expenditures for such things as commuting or study materials can be reduced or eliminated. One caveat, not all internet programs are accredited, which we will address in more detail later. But at the very least accreditation helps ensure that the education you receive is of the highest quality. So check to make sure that the program and school you are reviewing are accredited by a highly regarded agency, such as the American Bar Association. But if you are dedicated enough to study in a less supervised and formal setting, then obtaining your degree or certificate online could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Paralegal Degree Programs

Now that you have a better idea about what paralegals do and what educational choices are offered, you can begin the undertaking of evaluating Rockmart GA area schools. But considering that there are so many programs available at junior and community colleges, as well as trade and vocational schools, you need to know what questions to ask in order to evaluate each one. This is particularly true if you include all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs as well. If you are like many prospective students, you will begin by searching for schools within commuting distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have previously covered, there are other important factors to research also, for instance the reputation and accreditation of the schools. So let’s go over several of the questions you need to be asking the schools you are researching so that you can effectively vet each one and make your ultimate decision.

Is the Paralegal Program Accredited? The paralegal school and program that you choose should be accredited by a recognized accrediting agency such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online school, it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. Accreditation will not only help guarantee that the education you will obtain will be of the highest quality, but it will demonstrate to future employers that you are a qualified professional also. Numerous Rockmart GA law firms will only hire entry level paralegals that have graduated from an accredited school. Also, financial assistance and student loans are typically available only for accredited programs.

What’s the Program’s Reputation? Investigate what the reputations and rankings are for the Rockmart GA paralegal programs you are contemplating. This is of particular importance if you are new to the profession with no previous work history, since employers will have to make a decision based on the quality of your training exclusively. Confirming that the school you choose is accredited is an excellent first step. Checking school rating reports, such as those furnished by U.S. News and World Report, can help verify school quality of education and rankings as well. You can also call a few law practices that you may have an interest in working for after graduating and ask what schools they recommend. Bear in mind that even if a school is not the most highly rated, its paralegal program may still have an exceptional reputation.

Does the Program Provide Internships? Internship programs provide students a chance to experience working in a law firm or other legal operation while attending school. They can also provide an avenue for students to start developing contacts within the Rockmart GA legal field. Ask if the paralegal programs you are evaluating provide internship programs, particularly in areas of the law that you have the most interest in entering upon graduation.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the paralegal programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Georgia legal services employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? Considering that laws vary among states, it may be a good idea to select a paralegal school located in the state where you plan to work after graduating. Also, it will be important to create relationships in the area legal community, perhaps through an internship program. This is even more justification to acquire your education in the area where you wish to practice. Also, if you go to classes at a community college, many require an increased tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you may wish to first investigate those colleges that are within your Rockmart GA local region.

How Much is the Total Expense? Paralegal programs can differ in price based on the credential received and the amount of training furnished. Having said that, tuition will not be the only expense for your training. Don’t forget to add the cost of supplies, books and commuting to classes to your budget as well. Financial aid might be obtainable to help reduce some of the cost, so make sure to consult with the school’s financial aid office to find out what is offered in Rockmart GA. Naturally if you decide to attend an online school, some of these added costs, such as for commuting, might be reduced or eliminated.

Do the Classes Accommodate your Schedule? Numerous paralegal students continue working while obtaining their training and must have flexibility in class scheduling. If you can only attend weekend or evening classes near Rockmart GA, make sure classes are offered at those times. Also, if you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you choose makes available that option. Last, ask what the process is for making-up missed classes due to work, illness or family obligations.
