Kaneohe HI paralegal working with attorneyCongratulations on your decision to enroll in a paralegal school near Kaneohe HI and start your journey that will result in a fulfilling profession in legal services. Nevertheless, it’s important that you find the best school so that you will get the extensive training that you need to achieve success. As you most likely know, the legal field is among the fastest growing occupations in the United States, and more and more academic options are becoming available, both on campus and online. But with numerous alternatives to choose from, where does one begin? A number of prospective students start by searching for paralegal schools within commuting distance of their Kaneohe homes. Of those options, they search for the program with the most affordable tuition. Although location and cost are very important considerations when picking a school, they are not the only qualifiers you ought to take into consideration. Things such as accreditation and the reputation of the school must be taken into consideration also. Later on in this article we will review a list of questions that you ought to ask prospective paralegal certificate schools so that you can examine and compare every one prior to making your choice. But before we do, let’s have a look at what a paralegal does and the instructional alternatives that are available to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

Kaneohe HI law libraryParalegals and legal assistants for the most part both fill comparable job positions and responsibilities, only with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the same as either of those two positions and belong to a different job category. Both paralegals and legal assistants help lawyers in Kaneohe HI with a wide range of job functions, such as legal research, maintaining client files, communicating with clients, and drafting legal documents. Their specific job duties are relevant to the type of practice where they work. For example, a legal assistant for a criminal law practice might help with the logistics of a trial or transporting documents to court. In private practices, the work of a paralegal is normally billed hourly as are the lawyer’s. And the same as lawyers, they must conduct themselves with a high level of professionalism and follow a strict code of professional ethics. As stated, their responsibilities can be varied in support of the firms where they work, but some of their regular tasks might involve:

  • Investigating and fact checking cases
  • Conducting research on related laws and cases
  • Drafting correspondence and legal documents
  • Submitting legal papers with opposing counsel or the court
  • Helping attorneys prepare for trial and stay organized with their cases
  • Organizing and preserving legal documents, files and additional records

With all of their duties, the role of a Kaneohe HI paralegal can be involved and very challenging. On the other hand, what they are not legally authorized to do is offer legal counsel and advice or represent a client in a legal action. But paralegals are not restricted to clerical or administrative tasks more apropos to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals truly are the main support systems for lawyers. And because they do so much of the legal preparation and ground work, attorneys are able to handle a much larger number of clients or cases than they could otherwise.

Paralegal Training and Certification

law books and Kaneohe HI judge's gavelAs we discussed earlier, paralegals are essentially the same as legal assistants, with paralegals possibly having more professional sounding job titles. In any case, for either position the educational requirements and job prospects will be the same. The fastest way to start your career in Kaneohe HI as a paralegal is by earning a certificate, which can require as little as 6 months to complete. Most entry level positions do require an Associate’s Degree, which offer a more expansive education and may be obtained at numerous community colleges in two years. For an even more comprehensive education, four year Bachelor’s Degrees are available as well. Once you have earned either a degree or a certificate, you might choose to continue and get a certification. Even though it is not a legal requirement in Hawaii to work as a paralegal, certification may not only help improve your career opportunities, but help establish you as a professional also. Some of the highly respected certifying agencies in the profession are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a degree or certificate from an accredited program (we will cover the advantages of accreditation later) and obtaining a certification, you will have taken two essential first steps that will help ensure your success as a paralegal in Kaneohe HI.

Paralegal Online Certificates

attending paralegal school online in Kaneohe HIParalegal online programs have become more available and can be a good option for students in Kaneohe HI looking for convenient access to classes and flexible scheduling. Online schools can be especially appealing to those who keep working while obtaining a degree. As an additional advantage, online programs can sometimes be less expensive than on campus options. Even ancillary expenditures for such items as commuting or study materials may be minimized or eliminated. One caveat, not all online programs are accredited, which we will address in more detail later. But at a minimum accreditation helps guarantee that the training you obtain is of the highest caliber. So check to make sure that the program and school you are looking into are accredited by a respected organization, for instance the American Bar Association. But if you are disciplined enough to attend classes in a less structured and formal environment, then obtaining your certificate or degree online might be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Paralegal Degree Programs

Now that you have a better idea about what paralegals do and what educational choices are available, you can start the process of assessing Kaneohe HI area schools. But considering that there are so many programs accessible at junior and community colleges, as well as vocational and trade schools, you must learn what questions to ask in order to compare each one. This is particularly true when you include all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs also. If you are like the majority of potential students, you will begin by searching for schools within driving distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have already discussed, there are other critical factors to consider as well, including the reputation and accreditation of the schools. So let’s take a look at several of the questions you need to be asking the schools you are researching so that you can effectively vet each one and make your ultimate decision.

Is the Paralegal Program and School Accredited? The paralegal school and program that you choose need to be accredited by a respected organization such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online school, it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Accreditation will not only certify that the training you will obtain will be of the highest standard, but it will demonstrate to potential employers that you are a qualified professional as well. A number of Kaneohe HI law firms will only hire entry level legal assistants that are graduates of an accredited school. Finally, financial assistance and student loans are usually available only for accredited programs.

What’s the School’s Reputation? Research what the reputations and rankings are for the Kaneohe HI paralegal schools you are considering. This is of particular importance if you are new to the field with no previous work history, since employers will have to make a decision based on the quality of your education exclusively. Confirming that the program you select is accredited is an excellent first step. Checking school rating reports, including those provided by U.S. News and World Report, can help determine school quality of education and rankings as well. You can also call a few law offices that you may have an interest in working for after graduating and ask which schools they suggest. Remember that even when a school is not among the most highly ranked, its paralegal program could still have an exceptional reputation.

Does the Program Provide Internships? Internship programs provide students a chance to experience working in a law firm or other legal establishment while still in school. They can also present a pathway for students to start developing contacts within the Kaneohe HI legal community. Find out if the paralegal schools you are considering provide internship programs, especially in areas of the law that you have the most interest in entering after graduation.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the paralegal schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Hawaii legal services employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Campus Located? Since laws differ from one state to another, it may be advantageous to select a paralegal school located in the state where you wish to practice after graduation. Also, it will be valuable to cultivate relationships in the local legal community, perhaps by means of an internship program. This is all the more justification to acquire your education in the community where you wish to work. Also, if you attend classes at a community college, most require an increased tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might want to first consider those schools that are within your Kaneohe HI local region.

How Much is the Entire Expense? Paralegal schools can vary in price depending on the credential received and the length of training furnished. However, tuition will not be the only cost for your education. Don’t forget to add the cost of books, supplies and commuting to classes to your budget also. Financial assistance may be available to help reduce part of the cost, so make sure to check with the school’s financial aid office to see what is available in Kaneohe HI. Naturally if you opt to attend an online program, a portion these supplementary expenses, for instance for commuting, may be reduced or eliminated.

Do the Classes Match your Schedule? A number of paralegal students keep working while obtaining their training and require flexibility to schedule classes. If you can just attend weekend or evening classes near Kaneohe HI, make certain classes are offered at those times. Also, if you can only attend on a part time basis, confirm that the program you select makes available that option. Last, ask what the process is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Kaneohe, Hawaii

Kāneʻohe is a census-designated place (CDP) included in the City and County of Honolulu and located in Hawaiʻi state District of Koʻolaupoko on the island of Oʻahu. In the Hawaiian language, kāne ʻohe means "bamboo man". According to an ancient Hawaiian story a local woman compared her husband's cruelty to the sharp edge of cutting bamboo; thus the place was named Kāneʻohe or "Bamboo man". The population was 34,597 at the 2010 census.[1] Kāneʻohe is the largest of several communities along Kāneʻohe Bay and one of the two largest residential communities on the windward side of Oʻahu (the other is Kailua). The commercial center of the town is spread mostly along Kamehameha Highway.

From ancient times, Kāneʻohe was important as an agricultural area, owing to an abundance of rainfall. Today, Kāneʻohe is mostly a residential community, with very little agriculture in evidence. The only commercial crop of any consequence in the area is banana.

Features of note are Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden and the new Hawaiʻi National Veterans Cemetery. Access to Kāneʻohe Bay is mainly from the public pier and boat ramp located at nearby Heʻeia Kea. Access to Coconut Island (restricted) is from the state pier off Lilipuna Road. Marine Corps Base Hawaii lies across the south end of Kāneʻohe Bay from the central part of Kāneʻohe, although the town stretches along Kāneʻohe Bay Drive to the base perimeter.

Kaneohe is located at 21°24′33″N 157°47′57″W / 21.40917°N 157.79917°W / 21.40917; -157.79917 (21.409200, -157.799084).[2] Nearby towns include Kailua to the east, reached either by Kāneʻohe Bay Drive (State Rte. 630) or Kamehameha Highway (State Rte. 83), the former also providing a connection to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, and the latter connecting to Interstate H-3 and (at Castle Junction) Pali Highway (State Rte. 61) to Honolulu. Likelike Highway (State Rte. 63) runs southwest over and through the Koʻolau to Honolulu. Likelike provides connections to Kahekili Highway and Heʻeia, and H-3 southbound to Hālawa. The first three exits on the windward side of Interstate H-3 east (north) bound access Kāneʻohe. Following Kamehameha Highway northward from Kāneʻohe (State Rte. 830) leads through Heʻeia to Heʻeia Kea.
