Later in this article we will review a list of concerns that you ought to ask potential paralegal certificate schools so that you can assess and compare every one before making your selection. But first, let’s take a look at what a paralegal does and the educational options that are offered to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

Kapaau HI law libraryParalegals and legal assistants essentially both hold comparable job roles and responsibilities, only with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the equivalent of either of those two positions and belong to a different job classification. Both paralegals and legal assistants assist lawyers in Kapaau HI with a wide range of job duties, such as legal research, maintaining client files, drafting legal documents and communicating with clients. Their specific job functions are relevant to the type of legal firm where they are employed. For example, a legal assistant for a criminal law practice could assist with trial logistics or delivering documents to court. In private practices, the work of a paralegal is normally billed by the hour as are the lawyer’s. And just like lawyers, they must perform with a high degree of professionalism and comply with a strict code of professional ethics. As stated, their duties can be wide ranging in support of the practices where they are employed, but a few of their regular tasks might include:

  • Researching and fact checking cases
  • Conducting research on pertinent cases and laws
  • Composing correspondence and legal papers
  • Submitting legal documents with opposing counsel or the court
  • Assisting attorneys prepare for trial and keep organized with their cases
  • Organizing and preserving legal files, documents and additional records

With all of their duties, the job of a Kapaau HI paralegal can be involved and quite challenging. However, what they are not legally permitted to do is provide legal counsel and advice or represent a client in a legal action. But they are not limited to administrative or clerical functions more apropos to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals really are the main support systems for lawyers. And because they do so much of the legal ground work and preparation, lawyers have the ability to take on a much larger number of clients or cases than they could alone.

Paralegal Education and Certification

law books and Kapaau HI judge's gavelAs we discussed earlier, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals arguably having more professional sounding job titles. In any case, for either position the educational prerequisites and opportunities will be the same. The quickest way to begin your career in Kapaau HI as a paralegal is by obtaining a certificate, which can take as little as six months to complete. Most entry level positions do call for an Associate’s Degree, which provide a more expansive education and can be obtained at many community colleges in 2 years. For an even more extensive education, 4 year Bachelor’s Degrees are available also. When you have obtained either a degree or a certificate, you might choose to proceed and obtain a certification. Although it is not a legal requirement in Hawaii to work as a paralegal, certification can not only help improve your job opportunities, but help substantiate you as a professional also. Some of the highly regarded certifying organizations in the field are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a degree or certificate from an accredited program (we will discuss the benefits of accreditation later) and obtaining a certification, you will have taken 2 important initial steps that will help guarantee your success as a paralegal in Kapaau HI.

Online Paralegal Certificates

attending paralegal school online in Kapaau HIParalegal online schools have become more common and can be an excellent alternative for individuals in Kapaau HI looking for convenient access to classes and accommodating scheduling. Online programs can be especially appealing to those who keep working while obtaining a certificate or degree. As an added benefit, online schools can often be less costly than more traditional options. Even secondary expenditures for such things as study materials or commuting can be minimized or eliminated. One caveat, not all internet schools are accredited, which we will cover in more detail later. But at the very least accreditation helps ensure that the education you obtain is of the highest quality. So check to make sure that the school and program you are considering are accredited by a respected organization, for example the American Bar Association. But if you are disciplined enough to study in a less supervised and conventional environment, then earning your degree or certificate online might be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Paralegal Colleges

Now that you have a better idea about what paralegals do and what educational options are available, you can begin the process of assessing Kapaau HI area schools. But since there are so many programs offered at community and junior colleges, in addition to trade and vocational schools, you must learn what questions to ask in order to evaluate each one. This is particularly true if you include all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs as well. If you are like the majority of prospective students, you will begin by looking for schools within driving distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have already covered, there are other significant factors to research also, including the reputation and accreditation of the schools. So let’s take a look at some of the questions you need to be asking the programs you are considering so that you can thoroughly vet each one and make your ultimate selection.

Is the Paralegal Training Accredited? The paralegal program and school that you select should be accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online program, it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Accreditation will not only certify that the education you will get will be of the highest standard, but it will show potential employers that you are a qualified professional also. Numerous Kapaau HI law firms will only employ entry level legal assistants that have graduated from an accredited program. Finally, financial assistance and student loans are often obtainable only for accredited schools.

What’s the Program’s Reputation? Learn what the rankings and reputations are for the Kapaau HI paralegal schools you are looking at. This is of specific importance if you are new to the profession with no prior experience, since employers will have to rely on the quality of your training exclusively. Verifying that the school you pick is accredited is an excellent first step. Reviewing school rating services, including those provided by U.S. News and World Report, can help confirm school rankings and quality of education as well. You can also contact several law practices that you may be interested in working for after graduation and ask which schools they suggest. Remember that even when a school is not the most highly rated, its paralegal program may still have an outstanding reputation.

Does the Program Provide Internships? Internship programs provide students an opportunity to experience working in a law firm or other legal operation while still in school. They can also present an avenue for students to start developing contacts within the Kapaau HI legal field. Find out if the paralegal programs you are evaluating offer internship programs, particularly in areas of the law that you have the most interest in pursuing after graduation.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the paralegal programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Hawaii legal services employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? Because laws vary from one state to another, it might be a good idea to enroll in a paralegal school domiciled in the state where you plan to practice after graduation. In addition, it will be valuable to create relationships in the local legal community, perhaps through an internship program. This is all the more reason to receive your education in the area where you want to work. Also, if you attend classes at a community college, most charge an increased tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you may need to initially consider those schools that are within your Kapaau HI local region.

What is the Total Cost? Paralegal schools can vary in cost based on the credential obtained and the amount of training furnished. However, tuition will not be the only cost for your training. Don’t forget to add the cost of supplies, books and commuting to classes to your budget also. Financial assistance might be accessible to help offset some of the expense, so be sure to consult with the school’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Kapaau HI. Of course if you choose to attend an online program, some of these supplementary expenses, such as for commuting, might be decreased or eliminated.

Do the Class Times Fit your Schedule? A number of paralegal students keep working while receiving their training and must have flexibility in class scheduling. If you can just attend weekend or evening classes near Kapaau HI, make certain classes are offered at those times. Also, if you can only attend on a part time basis, make sure that the school you choose provides that option. Last, ask what the procedure is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family obligations.
