Later on in this article we will review a list of concerns that you need to ask potential paralegal certificate schools so that you can assess and compare each one before making your decision. But before we do, let’s take a look at exactly what a paralegal does and the academic alternatives that are available to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

West Tisbury MA law libraryParalegals and legal assistants essentially both fill comparable job roles and functions, just with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the same as either of those two positions and are part of a different job category. Both paralegals and legal assistants assist lawyers in West Tisbury MA with a wide range of job functions, including legal research, maintaining client files, communicating with clients, and drafting legal documents. Their specific job duties are based upon the type of practice where they work. For example, a legal assistant for a criminal law practice could assist with trial logistics or delivering documents to court. In private practices, the work of a paralegal is typically billed hourly as are the attorney’s. And just like attorneys, they must perform with a high level of professionalism and follow a strict code of professional ethics. As noted, their responsibilities can be wide ranging in support of the practices where they work, but some of their day-to-day tasks can involve:

  • Investigating and fact checking cases
  • Researching relevant cases and laws
  • Preparing correspondence and legal documents
  • Filing legal papers with opposing counsel or the court
  • Helping lawyers get ready for trial and keep organized with their cases
  • Organizing and maintaining legal files, documents and additional records

With all of their duties, the role of a West Tisbury MA paralegal can be complex and quite demanding. On the other hand, what they are not legally authorized to do is offer legal advice and counsel or represent a client in a legal action. But they are not limited to administrative or clerical duties more suited to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals truly are the right hand support systems for attorneys. And since they do so much of the legal preparation and ground work, attorneys are able to handle a much larger volume of clients or cases than they could on their own.

Paralegal Programs and Certification

law books and West Tisbury MA judge's gavelAs we discussed earlier, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals perhaps having more professional sounding job titles. As a result, for either position the educational requirements and job prospects will be the same. The quickest way to launch your career in West Tisbury MA as a paralegal is by obtaining a certificate, which may take as little as 6 months to complete. Many entry level positions do call for an Associate’s Degree, which furnish a more comprehensive education and may be earned at many community colleges in 2 years. For an even more comprehensive education, 4 year Bachelor’s Degrees are offered as well. After you have acquired either a certificate or degree, you may want to continue and obtain a certification. Even though it is not a mandatory requirement in Massachusetts to practice as a paralegal, certification may not only help boost your job opportunities, but help substantiate you as a professional also. Some of the highly respected certifying agencies in the field are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a certificate or degree from an accredited program (we will address the advantages of accreditation later) and earning a certification, you will have taken two crucial initial steps that will help ensure your success as a paralegal in West Tisbury MA.

Online Paralegal Degrees

attending paralegal school online in West Tisbury MAParalegal online schools have become more available and can be a good alternative for students in West Tisbury MA looking for convenient access to classes as well as flexible scheduling. Online programs can be especially appealing to students who keep working while earning a certificate or degree. As an added benefit, online schools can often be less costly than more traditional options. Even ancillary expenses for such items as study materials or commuting can be reduced or eliminated. One caveat, not all online schools are accredited, which we will cover in greater detail later. But at the very least accreditation helps ensure that the education you obtain is of the highest caliber. So check to make certain that the school and program you are looking into are accredited by a reputable organization, for instance the American Bar Association. But if you are dedicated enough to attend classes in a less supervised and conventional setting, then obtaining your certificate or degree online may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Paralegal Colleges

Now that you have a better understanding regarding what paralegals do and what academic options are available, you can begin the undertaking of evaluating West Tisbury MA area schools. But considering that there are numerous programs offered at community and junior colleges, as well as trade and vocational schools, you need to learn what questions to ask so that you can compare each one. This is especially true if you include all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs also. If you are like most prospective students, you will start by searching for schools within driving distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have already discussed, there are other crucial factors to research as well, including accreditation and the reputation of the schools. So let’s take a look at a few of the questions you need to be asking the schools you are considering so that you can properly vet each one and make your final choice.

Is the Paralegal Program Accredited? The paralegal program and school that you enroll in need to be accredited by a respected accrediting agency such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online program, it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. Accreditation will not only help guarantee that the training you will obtain will be of the highest standard, but it will show potential employers that you are a qualified professional also. A number of West Tisbury MA law firms will only hire entry level paralegals that have graduated from an accredited program. Also, financial aid and student loans are often available only for accredited programs.

What’s the Reputation of the Program? Research what the reputations and rankings are for the West Tisbury MA paralegal schools you are looking at. This is of special importance if you are new to the profession with no prior experience, since employers will need to make a decision based on the caliber of your education exclusively. Confirming that the program you choose is accredited is a good first step. Checking school rating services, such as those furnished by U.S. News and World Report, can help confirm school quality of education and rankings as well. You can also call some law firms that you may be interested in working for after graduation and ask which schools they recommend. Keep in mind that even when a school is not among the most highly rated, its paralegal program could still have an outstanding reputation.

Does the Program Sponsor Internships? Internship programs provide students an opportunity to experience working in a law firm or other legal enterprise while still in school. They can also present a pathway for students to start creating contacts within the West Tisbury MA legal community. Ask if the paralegal programs you are evaluating provide internship programs, especially in areas of the law that you are most interested in pursuing after graduation.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the paralegal schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Massachusetts legal services employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? Considering that laws vary from one state to another, it might be advantageous to enroll in a paralegal school domiciled in the state where you plan to practice after graduation. Also, it will be important to develop relationships in the local legal community, possibly by means of an internship program. This is all the more justification to acquire your education in the community where you wish to work. Also, if you go to classes at a community college, most charge a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you may need to first consider those colleges that are within your West Tisbury MA local region.

What is the Entire Cost? Paralegal programs can vary in cost depending on the credential earned and the amount of training furnished. Having said that, tuition will not be the only cost for your training. Remember to add the cost of supplies, books and commuting to classes to your budget also. Financial aid may be available to help offset some of the cost, so make sure to talk to the school’s financial aid department to see what is offered in West Tisbury MA. Of course if you choose to attend an online school, some of these additional costs, for instance for commuting, might be reduced or eliminated.

Do the Classes Match your Schedule? Many paralegal students keep working while obtaining their training and must have flexibility to schedule classes. If you can just attend night or weekend classes near West Tisbury MA, make sure classes are available at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part time basis, make sure that the school you choose provides that option. Last, inquire what the protocol is for making-up missed classes due to sickness, work or family emergencies.
