However, legal secretaries are not the same as either of those two positions and are part of a separate job classification. Both paralegals and legal assistants help lawyers in Twin Bridges MT with a diverse array of job duties, including maintaining client files, legal research, communicating with clients, and drafting legal documents. Their specific job duties are based upon the type of legal firm where they work. In private practices, the work of a paralegal is typically billed by the hour as are the lawyer’s. And the same as lawyers, they must carry out their duties with a high degree of professionalism and adhere to a strict standard of professional ethics. As mentioned, their responsibilities can be diverse in support of the firms where they work, but some of their regular activities can involve:

  • Investigating and fact checking cases
  • Conducting research on applicable cases and laws
  • Drafting correspondence and legal documents
  • Filing legal documents with opposing counsel or the court
  • Assisting attorneys prepare for trial and keep organized with their cases
  • Organizing and maintaining legal files, documents and other records

With all of their responsibilities, the role of a Twin Bridges MT paralegal can be complicated and very demanding. On the other hand, what they are not legally permitted to do is give legal advice and counsel or represent a client in a legal proceeding. But paralegals are not confined to administrative or clerical duties more apropos to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals really are the main support systems for attorneys. And since they do so much of the legal ground work and preparation, attorneys are able to take on a much larger number of clients or cases than they could otherwise.

Paralegal Training and Certification

In any case, for either position the educational prerequisites and opportunities will be the same. The quickest way to begin your career in Twin Bridges MT as a paralegal is by earning a certificate, which can take as little as 6 months to accomplish. A large number of entry level positions do call for an Associate’s Degree, which furnish a more comprehensive education and may be acquired at many community colleges in two years. For an even more extensive education, 4 year Bachelor’s Degrees are an option also. After you have obtained either a certificate or degree, you may choose to continue and earn a certification. Even though it is not a mandatory requirement in Montana to work as a paralegal, certification may not only help maximize your career opportunities, but help establish you as a professional also. Some of the highly regarded certifying organizations in the profession are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a degree or certificate from an accredited school (we will address the benefits of accreditation later) and earning a certification, you will have taken two important initial steps that will help ensure your success as a paralegal in Twin Bridges MT.

Paralegal Online Classes

attending paralegal school online in Twin Bridges MTParalegal online programs have become more popular and may be an excellent alternative for those in Twin Bridges MT searching for convenient access to classes and flexible scheduling. Online schools can be especially appealing to those who continue to work while earning a certificate or degree. As an added advantage, online classes can often be less costly than more traditional options. Even supplementary expenses for such items as commuting or study materials may be reduced or eliminated. One caveat, not all internet programs are accredited, which we will discuss in more detail later. But at a minimum accreditation helps ensure that the training you obtain is of the highest caliber. So check to make certain that the program and school you are looking into are accredited by a highly regarded agency, such as the American Bar Association. But if you are disciplined enough to study in a less structured and conventional environment, then earning your certificate or degree online might be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Paralegal Programs

Now that you have a better idea about what paralegals do and what academic options are available, you can start the process of evaluating Twin Bridges MT area schools. But since there are numerous programs accessible at junior and community colleges, in addition to vocational and trade schools, you need to learn what questions to ask in order to compare each one. This is particularly true when you include all of the online paralegal degree and certificate programs as well. If you are like many prospective students, you will start by searching for schools within driving distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have already discussed, there are other critical issues to think about as well, for instance the reputation and accreditation of the schools. So let’s go over some of the questions you should be asking the schools you are considering so that you can thoroughly vet each one and make your final choice.

Is the Paralegal Program Accredited? The paralegal school and program that you enroll in need to be accredited by a reputable organization such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online school, it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. Accreditation will not only certify that the training you will receive will be of the highest standard, but it will establish with future employers that you are a qualified professional also. Many Twin Bridges MT law firms will only hire entry level legal assistants that have graduated from an accredited program. Finally, financial aid and student loans are often obtainable only for accredited programs.

What’s the School’s Reputation? Investigate what the reputations and rankings are for the Twin Bridges MT paralegal schools you are contemplating. This is of particular importance if you are entering the field with no previous experience, since employers will have to make a decision based on the quality of your education exclusively. Checking that the program you select is accredited is an excellent first step. Reviewing school rating services, including those furnished by U.S. News and World Report, can help determine school quality of education and rankings as well. You can also contact some law practices that you may have an interest in working for after graduating and ask which schools they suggest. Remember that even when a school is not among the most highly rated, its paralegal program could still have an exceptional reputation.

Does the Program Offer Internships? Internship programs provide students an opportunity to experience working in a law firm or other legal enterprise while attending school. They can also provide an avenue for students to start establishing contacts within the Twin Bridges MT legal field. Find out if the paralegal programs you are evaluating offer internship programs, specifically in areas of the law that you have the most interest in entering after graduation.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the paralegal schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Montana legal services employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School’s Location? Because laws vary among states, it might be beneficial to choose a paralegal school located in the state where you want to practice after graduation. In addition, it will be important to establish relationships in the local legal community, perhaps by means of an internship program. This is even more justification to acquire your education in the community where you desire to work. Also, if you attend classes at a community college, most charge an increased tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you might need to initially consider those schools that are within your Twin Bridges MT local region.

What is the Entire Expense? Paralegal programs can vary in cost based on the credential obtained and the amount of training furnished. Having said that, tuition will not be the only expenditure for your training. Remember to add the cost of supplies, books and commuting to classes to your budget also. Financial aid might be available to help offset part of the cost, so be sure to contact the school’s financial aid office to find out what is offered in Twin Bridges MT. Naturally if you opt to attend an online program, a portion these supplementary costs, such as for commuting, may be decreased or eliminated.

Do the Class Times Fit your Schedule? A number of paralegal students keep working while getting their training and must have flexibility to schedule classes. If you can only attend night or weekend classes near Twin Bridges MT, make certain classes are available at those times. Also, if you can only attend on a part time basis, confirm that the school you enroll in offers that option. Last, inquire what the protocol is for making up missed classes because of work, illness or family obligations.
