Boaz AL paralegal working with attorneyBest Wishes regarding your decision to enroll in paralegal studies near Boaz AL and begin your journey that will result in a satisfying career in legal services. However, it’s essential that you locate the right school so that you will receive the comprehensive training that you require to succeed. As you probably know, the legal field is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States, and a growing number of academic alternatives are becoming available, both on campus and online. But with so many options to choose from, where does one begin? Some prospective students start by looking for paralegal schools within traveling distance of their Boaz residences. Of those alternatives, they try to find the program with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are very important considerations when choosing a college, they are not the only factors you need to consider. Things like the reputation and accreditation of the school need to be taken into account also. Later in this post we will review a list of concerns that you need to ask prospective paralegal certificate schools so that you can examine and compare every one before making your selection. But before we do, let’s take a look at what a paralegal does and the academic alternatives that are offered to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

Boaz AL law libraryParalegals and legal assistants essentially both hold the same job roles and functions, just with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the same as either of those two positions and are part of a separate job classification. Both paralegals and legal assistants assist attorneys in Boaz AL with a wide range of job duties, including maintaining client files, legal research, drafting legal documents and communicating with clients. Their specific job functions are based upon the type of legal firm where they work. As an example, a legal assistant for a criminal law firm might help with the logistics of a trial or delivering documents to court. In private practices, the work of a paralegal is usually billed by the hour as are the lawyer’s. And the same as lawyers, they must conduct themselves with a high level of professionalism and comply with a strict standard of professional ethics. As stated, their responsibilities can be wide ranging in support of the practices where they are employed, but a few of their regular activities might involve:

  • Investigating and fact checking cases
  • Researching applicable laws and cases
  • Drafting correspondence and legal papers
  • Submitting legal documents with opposing counsel or the court
  • Helping lawyers prepare for trial and stay organized with their cases
  • Organizing and maintaining legal documents, files and other records

With all of their duties, the job of a Boaz AL paralegal can be involved and very demanding. However, what they are not legally authorized to do is provide legal advice and counsel or represent a client in a legal proceeding. But they are not confined to clerical or administrative tasks more suited to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals truly are the right hand support systems for attorneys. And because they do so much of the legal preparation and ground work, lawyers are able to handle a much larger number of cases or clients than they could otherwise.

Paralegal Programs and Certification

law books and Boaz AL judge's gavelAs we discussed earlier, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals perhaps having more professional sounding job titles. As a result, for either position the academic prerequisites and opportunities will be the same. The quickest means to start your career in Boaz AL as a paralegal is by earning a certificate, which may take just 6 months to complete. A large number of entry level positions do require an Associate’s Degree, which furnish a more comprehensive education and may be earned at many community colleges in 2 years. And if you are interested in an even more comprehensive education, 4 year Bachelor’s Degrees are offered as well. After you have acquired either a certificate or degree, you may want to proceed and get a certification. Even though it is not a mandatory requirement in Alabama to practice as a paralegal, certification may not only help increase your career opportunities, but help substantiate you as a professional as well. Some of the highly regarded certifying agencies in the field are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a certificate or degree from an accredited school (we will address the advantages of accreditation later) and obtaining a certification, you will have taken 2 important first steps that will help ensure your success as a paralegal in Boaz AL.

Online Paralegal Schools

attending paralegal school online in Boaz ALParalegal online schools have become more prevalent and can be an excellent alternative for those in Boaz AL searching for convenient access to classes and accommodating scheduling. Online schools can be particularly appealing to individuals who keep working while obtaining a degree. As an additional advantage, online schools can in some cases be less expensive than more traditional options. Even ancillary expenses for such items as commuting or study materials can be minimized or eliminated. One caution, not all internet schools are accredited, which we will discuss in greater detail later. But at a minimum accreditation helps guarantee that the training you obtain is of the highest quality. So check to make certain that the school and program you are looking into are accredited by a respected organization, for instance the American Bar Association. But if you are disciplined enough to attend classes in a less supervised and conventional environment, then obtaining your degree or certificate online could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Paralegal Studies Programs

Now that you have a better idea about what paralegals do and what educational options are available, you can start the process of evaluating Boaz AL area schools. But because there are numerous programs offered at community and junior colleges, as well as vocational and trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so that you can evaluate each one. This is particularly true if you add all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs as well. If you are like most potential students, you will begin by looking for schools within commuting distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have already covered, there are other crucial factors to consider as well, including accreditation and the reputation of the schools. So let’s go over a few of the questions you should be asking the programs you are researching so that you can thoroughly vet each one and make your final selection.

Is the Paralegal Program and School Accredited? The paralegal school and program that you pick should be accredited by a respected accrediting agency such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online program, it might also get accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Accreditation will not only help guarantee that the education you will obtain will be of the highest standard, but it will establish with potential employers that you are a qualified professional also. A number of Boaz AL law firms will only employ entry level paralegals that have graduated from an accredited program. Finally, financial assistance and student loans are often accessible only for accredited schools.

What’s the School’s Reputation? Find out what the reputations and rankings are for the Boaz AL paralegal schools you are considering. This is of particular importance if you are new to the field with no previous experience, since employers will have to make a decision based on the quality of your education exclusively. Checking that the program you choose is accredited is an excellent first step. Checking school rating reports, such as those provided by U.S. News and World Report, can help verify school rankings and quality of education as well. You can also contact several law firms that you may be interested in working for after graduation and ask what schools they suggest. Remember that even when a school is not the most highly ranked, its paralegal program may still have an exceptional reputation.

Does the School Sponsor Internships? Internship programs provide students a chance to experience working in a law firm or other legal enterprise while attending school. They can also present a means for students to start establishing contacts within the Boaz AL legal field. Find out if the paralegal schools you are assessing provide internship programs, especially in areas of the law that you have the most interest in pursuing upon graduation.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the paralegal schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Alabama legal services employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? Considering that laws differ from one state to another, it may be advantageous to enroll in a paralegal school located in the state where you plan to practice after graduation. Also, it will be valuable to establish relationships in the local legal community, possibly through an internship program. This is all the more justification to receive your education in the community where you choose to work. Also, if you attend classes at a community college, many charge an increased tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you might want to first investigate those colleges that are within your Boaz AL local area.

What is the Complete Expense? Paralegal schools can differ in cost depending on the credential obtained and the amount of training furnished. However, tuition will not be the only expenditure for your training. Don’t forget to include the cost of books, supplies and commuting to classes to your budget also. Financial aid might be accessible to help offset some of the cost, so don’t forget to talk to the school’s financial aid department to see what is available in Boaz AL. Needless to say that if you opt to attend an online program, some of these additional costs, for instance for commuting, may be decreased or eliminated.

Do the Class Times Accommodate your Schedule? Numerous paralegal students keep working while getting their training and must have flexibility in class scheduling. If you can only attend weekend or evening classes near Boaz AL, make sure classes are offered at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part time basis, make certain that the program you select provides that option. Last, inquire what the process is for making up missed classes due to sickness, work or family obligations.
