As you probably understand, the legal field is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States, and a growing number of educational options are being offered, both on campus and online. Things like the reputation and accreditation of the program ought to be taken into consideration as well. Later in this article we will cover a list of concerns that you should ask potential paralegal certificate schools so that you can evaluate and compare each one prior to making your decision. But first, let’s take a look at what a paralegal does and the instructional choices that are available to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

Chelsea AL law libraryParalegals and legal assistants basically both fill comparable job roles and functions, just with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the equivalent of either of those two positions and are part of a separate job category. Both paralegals and legal assistants help lawyers in Chelsea AL with a wide range of job duties, including maintaining client files, legal research, communicating with clients, and drafting legal documents. Their specific job duties are based upon the type of practice where they are employed. For example, a legal assistant for a criminal law practice could assist with the logistics of a trial or delivering files to court. In private practices, a paralegal’s work is typically billed hourly as are the lawyer’s. And just like attorneys, they must perform with a high degree of professionalism and abide by a strict standard of professional ethics. As mentioned, their duties can be wide ranging in support of the firms where they are employed, but some of their routine tasks may include:

  • Investigating and fact checking cases
  • Researching related cases and laws
  • Preparing correspondence and legal documents
  • Submitting legal papers with the court or opposing counsel
  • Assisting attorneys prepare for trial and stay organized with their cases
  • Organizing and managing legal files, documents and other records

With all of their duties, the role of a Chelsea AL paralegal can be involved and very demanding. However, what they are not legally permitted to do is offer legal advice and counsel or represent a client in a legal proceeding. But they are not confined to clerical or administrative tasks more suited to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals truly are the main support systems for attorneys. And because they do so much of the legal ground work and preparation, lawyers are able to take on a much larger number of clients or cases than they could otherwise.

Paralegal Training and Certification

law books and Chelsea AL judge's gavelAs we discussed earlier, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals perhaps having more professional sounding job titles. In any case, for either position the educational prerequisites and opportunities will be the same. The quickest way to launch your career in Chelsea AL as a paralegal is by obtaining a certificate, which can take as little as 6 months to accomplish. Most entry level positions do require an Associate’s Degree, which offer a more extensive education and can be obtained at many community colleges in two years. And if you are interested in an even more comprehensive education, 4 year Bachelor’s Degrees are available as well. After you have obtained either a degree or a certificate, you might want to continue and receive a certification. Even though it is not a legal requirement in Alabama to practice as a paralegal, certification may not only help improve your job opportunities, but help establish you as a professional as well. A few of the highly regarded certifying organizations in the field are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a certificate or degree from an accredited program (we will address the benefits of accreditation later) and earning a certification, you will have taken 2 crucial first steps that will help ensure your success as a paralegal in Chelsea AL.

Paralegal Online Classes

attending paralegal school online in Chelsea ALParalegal online schools have become more prevalent and may be an excellent alternative for those in Chelsea AL searching for convenient access to classes as well as flexible scheduling. Online programs can be especially appealing to individuals who continue to work while obtaining a degree. As an added advantage, online programs can in some cases be less costly than on campus options. Even ancillary expenditures for such things as commuting or study materials may be reduced or eliminated. One caveat, not all online schools are accredited, which we will discuss in more detail later. But at the very least accreditation helps guarantee that the education you obtain is of the highest quality. So check to make sure that the school and program you are looking into are accredited by a reputable organization, for instance the American Bar Association. But if you are disciplined enough to attend classes in a less supervised and formal setting, then obtaining your degree or certificate online might be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Paralegal Studies Programs

Since you now you have a better understanding regarding what paralegals do and what training choices are offered, you can begin the undertaking of assessing Chelsea AL area schools. But since there are so many programs accessible at community and junior colleges, in addition to trade and vocational schools, you must find out what questions to ask in order to compare each one. This is especially true if you add all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs as well. If you are like most prospective students, you will start by looking for schools within driving distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have previously covered, there are other important issues to consider also, for instance accreditation and the reputation of the schools. So let’s take a look at several of the questions you need to be asking the schools you are researching so that you can thoroughly vet each one and make your ultimate selection.

Is the Paralegal Program and School Accredited? The paralegal school and program that you choose need to be accredited by a respected accrediting agency such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online program, it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Accreditation will not only help guarantee that the training you will receive will be of the highest quality, but it will demonstrate to future employers that you are a qualified professional also. A number of Chelsea AL law firms will only hire entry level paralegals that have graduated from an accredited program. Finally, financial aid and student loans are usually available only for accredited programs.

What’s the School’s Reputation? Research what the reputations and rankings are for the Chelsea AL paralegal schools you are considering. This is of special importance if you are entering the profession with no prior experience, since employers will need to make a decision based on the caliber of your training exclusively. Checking that the program you pick is accredited is an excellent first step. Reviewing school rating reports, including those provided by U.S. News and World Report, can help determine school rankings and quality of education as well. You can also contact a few law practices that you may have an interest in working for after graduation and ask which schools they suggest. Bear in mind that even if a school is not among the most highly ranked, its paralegal program may still have an outstanding reputation.

Does the Program Provide Internships? Internship programs give students a chance to experience working in a law practice or other legal establishment while remaining in school. They can also provide a pathway for students to begin creating contacts within the Chelsea AL legal community. Find out if the paralegal programs you are assessing provide internship programs, particularly in areas of the law that you are most interested in entering upon graduation.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the paralegal programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama legal services employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? Because laws vary among states, it might be beneficial to enroll in a paralegal school domiciled in the state where you plan to practice after graduation. In addition, it will be important to cultivate relationships in the neighboring legal community, perhaps through an internship program. This is even more justification to obtain your education in the community where you want to work. Also, if you attend classes at a community college, most require a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might want to first investigate those schools that are within your Chelsea AL local area.

How Much is the Total Cost? Paralegal schools can differ in price depending on the credential received and the length of training provided. However, tuition will not be the only cost for your training. Don’t forget to include the cost of supplies, books and commuting to classes to your budget also. Financial assistance may be accessible to help minimize part of the cost, so make sure to talk to the school’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Chelsea AL. Naturally if you choose to attend an online school, a portion these supplementary expenses, such as for commuting, might be reduced or eliminated.

Do the Class Times Fit your Schedule? Many paralegal students keep working while obtaining their training and need flexibility to schedule classes. If you can only attend weekend or evening classes near Chelsea AL, make sure classes are available at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part time basis, make certain that the program you select offers that option. Last, inquire what the protocol is for making up missed classes due to work, illness or family obligations.
